Abstract

Males far outnumber males in drug use and drug related problems and differ in several aspects of drug addiction. In Europe more than 36 million women have tried an illicit substance in 2016 and 100 00 have entered treatment, representing respectively around 40%, of experimental users and 20% of those entering treatment. Gender differences vary according to patterns of drug use (high risk drug use and type of drugs), consequences of drug use (drug related infections and deaths), country and age. In drug treatment demand data, the highest ratios are reported in the south and the lowest in the north of Europe. The presentation will provide an overview of the current situation concerning drugs and gender in Europe with the objective to give a basis for the panel discussion.
