Abstract

Whilst smoking prevalence is declining in general populations, it remains high among those with mental illness. We have been involved in two pilot studies in different countries and using different EC models. This presentation will summarise the evidence from these trials as well as other studies in this field including observational population studies which include smoking and EC use by mental health status. We will also draw on experiences from one mental health Trust which allows the use of EC on the premises whilst operating a comprehensive smoke-free policy and a comprehensive nicotine dependence treatment pathway. Recommendations and available training in use of EC in quit attempts for stop smoking practitioners and health professionals supporting smokers with mental health problems to quit will be highlighted.
