1. Developing a functional taxonomy for Digital Health Interventions in Addiction Services

This functional taxonomy aims to provide a pragmatic approach to understanding what a DHI can do to improve upon the treatment, delivery and organization of addiction services, in keeping with the resources, infrastructure and legal framework of individual member states.

We use the framework for Successful Healthcare Improvement From Translating Evidence in complex systems (SHIFTEvidence). The steps included: combining knowledge with context, understanding the uniqueness of each local system and respond to complexity from the micro- to macro-system and engage and empower stakeholders in developing the taxonomy.

We identified broad agreement around what was important in developing DHI including

• What is the problem/ issue/concern we are trying to address?
• What Investment, resources & opportunity costs are involved?
• What the risks are to the service, service user and the public?
• What is the existing design, technical quality & evidence base?
