1. Steps forward in an attempt of OKANA to widen harm reduction to risk reduction: entries and facilities within a new concept based on the real needs
Abstract
Over the past three years, OKANA has focused on strengthening harm reduction. OKANA has redefined harm reduction and expanded its direct access network with new facilities. A drug consumption room for drug users and a shelter for homeless drug users were established in the Center of Athens. The use of naloxone was also expanded to prevent overdose deaths on site.
Data were provided by the units applying harm reduction services and are presented to show overall progress over the last three years and to illustrate OKANA's holistic approach. In addition, the overall progress of street work actions will be presented, as well as the upcoming results of the first year of operation of the new drug consumption room and hostel operating in Athens.
The entire direct access network will be presented, as well as the steps taken to achieve a holistic approach. The initial results of the new facilities are presented along with the overall progress of the facilities involved in harm reduction. The expansion of naloxone use and the prevention of overdose deaths, as well as the difficulties encountered to date, are analysed.
The overall operation of OKANA, redefining Harm Reduction and the Direct Access Network from 2019 to today, and its key role in public health in Greece. Difficulties and challenges, but also with undeniable results are now available, leading OKANA to enforce harm reduction and try to expand harm reduction’s meaning to risk reduction with an overall approach.
