2. What are the barriers and prospects for establishing Cannabis Social Clubs in New Zealand?
Abstract
Despite the prohibition on cannabis use, possession and supply in New Zealand for over 50 years, there is a rich history of cannabis activism in the country, including a number of high-profile attempts to establish cannabis social clubs (CSCs). Yet surprisingly little is known about the adoption and practice of the CSC model in New Zealand.
This presentation will discuss grassroots efforts to run CSCs in New Zealand and analyse barriers that have prevented the CSC model from gaining a wider foothold in the country. Additionally, we will discuss the potential for greater uptake of the CSC model in New Zealand in the future, including how CSC-like organisations could be included in the recent cannabis legalisation proposals [e.g., the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill (CLCB).
