About

North America is in the midst of an overdose crisis driven by illicitly-manufactured fentanyl and novel psychoactive substances. Within this context of a toxic drug supply, the concept of “safer supply” has been suggested as a potential measure to address the overdose crisis by providing a regulated alternative to illicit opioids and stimulants to people at high overdose risk. The session will provide an overview of the concept of “safer supply” and examples of safer supply programs operating in two Canadian provinces (Ontario and British Columbia). The session offers practical insight into safer supply program feasibility, design, and implementation, including potential for scale-up. Program engagement and outcomes will be discussed to demonstrate safer supply as an important intervention to address the overdose crisis by providing people who use drugs alternatives to a toxic drug supply.
