About

Pia Mäkelä is a Research Professor in the Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco team at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. She has been active in the alcohol research field for 30 years, has published more than 200 scientific articles, and is a Senior Editor in the journal Addiction. Her research covers themes related to alcohol use, drinking culture, consequences of alcohol use and alcohol policy in Finland and comparatively. Currently, she leads the Finnish Drinking Habit Survey project and evaluates the impacts of the Finnish Alcohol Act of 2018. Pia is an active expert in the national alcohol policy discussions, and she works actively to ensure that her research contributes to alcohol policy and practice.
