Common mental disorders in prisoners with childhood trauma and substance use; the role of emotion regulation

There is a strong association between mental disorders and crime with evidence showing that a significant proportion of prisoners has a history of psychiatric morbidity. Childhood trauma is a risk factor for mental disorders and substance use is not only prevalent among people who report trauma but also those entering prisons. The role of emotion regulation in the association of childhood trauma and mental disorders among prisoners with history of substance use needs to be established.
Childhood Trauma Questionnaire; Emotion Regulation Questionnaire; Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test; Structured Clinical Interview for DSM will be administered to recently incarcerated adults between 18 and 50 years of age in a Ugandan prison.
Regression models and mediation analysis will be used to test for associations
