Wednesday, 23 October, 2024 - 09:00 to 18:20

Abstract

Background
Belgium is one of few countries where drinking alcohol is permitted from the age of sixteen. The mean age of onset alcohol is Belgium is 14.6 years. Even though the age of onset of drinking alcohol is increasing for the last 10 years, preventive interventions for problematic use of alcohol later in live are necessary. ‘Nognito’ is a universal school based intervention for 10-14 year old pupils that aims to decrease the perceived acceptability of alcohol drinking at a young age and increase the perceived acceptability of refusing alcohol when offered. Furthermore decreasing positive alcohol attitudes, increasing negative alcohol attitudes and strengthening refusal skills are targeted with the program.
Methods
A randomized controlled pre-post test design was used to establish the effects of the Nognito program between February and April 2024. Measurements on pupils included perceived social norms (descriptive and injunctive), attitudes, knowledge and perceived behavioral control. Measurements on the level of the teacher include perceived need and impact of preventive interventions in school and responsibility of prevention, feasibility of the intervention, perceived response and satisfaction and implementation measures.
