Planning and Monitoring drug and alcohol treatment in Denmark. The MapPlan project.
Abstract
MapPlan is an assessment and monitoring system that is currently implemented in 62 of 75 municipalities offering drug and alcohol treatment in Denmark. MapPlan is free to use and voluntary to implement. It has been developed in close collaboration with addiction counselors.
In Denmark, there is a treatment guarantee stating that a person seeking help for problematic substance use must be offered treatment within 14 days, and a treatment plan must be formulated within this period. The purpose of MapPlan is to support addiction counselors in formulating these treatment plans, ensuring that, in addition to substance use, psychological, social, and somatic resources and barriers are identified. This helps counselors to formulate treatment aims in agreement with the patient through shared decision-making. By using the Wellbeing and Outcome Monitoring tool (WOM), the outcome of the intervention is measured during each session, including the use of alcohol and drugs, wellbeing, and everyday function.
The payment for participating in MapPlan is the sharing of collected data with Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research for research purposes. In 2023, approximately 9000 cases were reported to MapPlan, and this number is expected to increase significantly (from January 1, 2024, Copenhagen Municipality will report all patients enrolled in treatment for drug use disorders to MapPlan). MapPlan is also a powerful research tool that serves as the foundation for publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles and reports. It is possible to combine Data from MapPlan with other national registers.
Starting from March 2024, MapPlan data will also serve as a Rapid Assessment Monitoring System (RAMS), which will be available in English. Annual reports and reports for each participating municipality are published, revealing a) the severerity of the patients substance use disorder and psycohological/psychiatric-, social- and somatick- problems and b) treatment outcomes.
This presentation will illustrate a) how counselors use MapPlan data to formulate a treatment plan, a) how the treatment outcomes are measured, c) how the RAMS works, and d) how data is used for research.
