Screentime and Social Media: psychological aspects and addiction
Abstract
Online activities involving prolonged screen time and the use of social media are widespread. Along with the opportunities and positive consequences associated with social media, the prevalence of problematic and addictive use is increasing. Much of this development is related to design features of digital media that aim to increase screen time and collect data from users in order to increase the profits of technology companies. One of these features is to increase users' fear of missing out (FoMO). Other psychological features and aspects are presented and linked to the development of excessive online activity and, in some cases, Internet use disorders. This is illustrated through the use of a theoretical model. Finally, challenges and opportunities for prevention and treatment are outlined.
