The challenges of the digital era: an interdisciplinary investigation of screen time and social media
About
The connection between digital media use and addiction has been a hot topic of academic and public debate for decades. Research points to similarities between different types of addictive behaviors, and advocates for a more nuanced perspective on digital media use that acknowledges different contexts and functions of media use in addition to individual patterns of media use. However, news reports about an increase in screen-based activities, behavioral addictions and other mental health problems are prevalent, seemingly demonizing digital media in many areas. This major session hosted by EUSPR and ISSBA aims to provide a balanced approach that discusses the challenges and opportunities of digital environments for youth development. By looking at historical examples of new media, presenting ethological and psychological perspectives, the session invites an interdisciplinary discussion on how we see and frame prevention in the digital age.
