Lives at risk: mental health and substance use

This session brings together four studies highlighting the risk of loss of life where substance use and mental health problems co-occur. We will hear about critical periods of risk such as the period after discharge from treatment; and critical situations such as those faced by refugees. We will also hear about the impact of severe mental illness on all-cause mortality as well as on death by intentional or unintentional poisoning. All four speakers have messages to inform strategies for prevention and targeted intervention.
