About
Sanjeewani Senevirathne is a seasoned professional in the fields of substance use disorder (SUD) prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, with over 13 years of experience. Currently, she serves as a Community Corrections Officer and the ‘Evidence-Based practices development officer” to the Department of CommunityBased Corrections under the Ministry of Justice in Sri Lanka, where she specializes in behavioral change and rehabilitation for minor offenders. Sanjeewani has provided clinical and counseling services to over 1,500 clients and is well-versed in evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
Her academic background includes a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship from Virginia Commonwealth University, focusing on substance abuse education, treatment, prevention, and psychological treatment for Substance addiction from Kings College University -London. Additionally, she holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling Psychology from the University of Colombo and a bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Sanjeewani has contributed to the academic community as a Counseling Psychology and Correctional Methods lecturer. She is also an accomplished researcher, author, and public speaker, with numerous publications and presentations on topics ranging from psychosocial risk factors for heroin addiction to community-based corrections. She has presented much of her research in international conferences. Her leadership extends to training new officers and serving as a Justice of Peace for the entire island of Sri Lanka.
Sanjeewani's commitment to public awareness is evident through her work as a freelance journalist, where she educates the public on mental health and substance use prevention. Her expertise and dedication have earned her prestigious honors, including the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship and the Knowledge Co-Creation Program training scholarship in Japan.
