Gambling in Low and Middle Income Countries: evidence from Indonesia and Sub-Saharan Africa
This presentation aims to provide case study examples of the challenges generated by growing commercial gambling in low and middle income countries and the responses of these countries to these challenges.
Two different case studies will explore the challenges of the growing global gambling market. The first is Indonesia, where commercial gambling is not legal yet still prevalent. The implications of this for treatment provision and prevention will be mapped. The second is sub-saharan Africa where commercial gambling has expanded rapidly in some countries. The consequences of this expansion and the capacity of some of these nations to respond and regulate the industry will be discussed.
This presentation will discuss the challenges of regulating the global gambling industry and how approaches vary globally, and intersect with specific cultural and political approaches. This will be discussed with reference to the impact of gambling on Sustainable Development Goals and with reference to actions most likely to raise the profile of gambling harms in these countries.
