About

Dessa Bergen-Cico, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Public Health, Coordinator of the Addiction Studies Programs and faculty of Neuroscience at Syracuse University. In addition Dr. Bergen-Cico is a Fellow of the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders, a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) and Certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Teacher. Dessa has been awarded two Fulbright Research Scholarships to study addictive behaviors, trauma and the use of mindfulness-based practices for prevention and recovery. Her areas of teaching and research focus on a.) substance use and addictive behaviors; b. ) traumatic stress c.) mindfulness-based practices for prevention and recovery, d.) use of biomarkers to measure treatment outcomes, and e.) geo-politics of drug policy. She has authored more than 50 scholarly publications, including the book “War and Drugs: The Role of Military Conflict in the Development of Substance Abuse.”
