Alcohol and other drug policies in the work setting – a perspective on European developments

Substance use among employees negatively impacts health, workplace safety and workplace atmosphere. Substance use can be related to factors within the job or workplace itself, but the workplace can also be a protective factor and part of a recovery trajectory. The workplace offers unique opportunities for policies regarding prevention, care and recovery of (problematic) substance use. One of the advantages is that many individuals can be reached including those who are less likely to find services otherwise. In this symposium we will discuss and share 5 perspectives on policies directed at substance use in the workplace. Together we will discuss on what is needed to address the needs of vulnerable employees. And we will exchange ideas on how to better collaborate on alcohol and drug policies in the work setting.
