Managing COVID-19 pandemic infection in the residential therapeutic community KETHEA ITHAKI: the view of TC members
Abstract
Aim of the present study was to investigate the experience of the Therapeutic Community members during the quarantine period due to COVID-19 infection in the TC KETHEA ITHAKI .
Participants were all 16 members of TC, 10 of which were infected and 6 who were not. Qualitative methodology was chosen. Specifically, thematic analysis was employed to analyse 16 reflection papers that TC members were asked to write for therapeutic purposes. Three main themes emerged from the analysis. Specifically the themes were a) motivation and collaboration to ovecome the crisis, b) sense of belonging and c) time for introspection. Resulds indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic created changes in the social networks among the residents. Adaptations to daily life and stoppage of the hierarchy as well as a change in the structure of the TC had a positve outcome in the handling of the COVID crisis by the non infected members who were new comers. Handling negative emotions and support in health care issues of the COVID -19 infected members by the non infected members and reassuring the safety of the TC in all aspects were evident throughout the quarantine period. Members were able to recall past powerful experiences despite the pressure imposed on them by the current conditions. Although the community was separated in two groups, in practical level due the quarantine period, the Community spirit was empowered.
Results indicate that experience of the COVID-19 crisis in TC was beneficial for both groups concerning personal growth and community unity. Stressful and adverse conditions can be of extreme value in a residential Community, implementing innovations in treatment.
